Africa morns the passing on of legendary Jazz Maestro Jonas Gwangwa who passed on this morning at the age of 83 in South Africa.

Through his 40 year career, Gwangwa has been one of the few living icons who since the 1950s pioneered the fight against the brutal South African Apartheid regime.

Among other outstanding accolades garnered, the Award Winning musician’s initial impact is felt through being part of the music composition for Cry for Freedom , a 1987 film which further scooped several awards.

Strangely surprising is how January 23 now goes down in history as a quite unique date to mark since is now sadly shared by notable Jazz Icons who passed on on the same date; Hugh Masekela (23 January 2018) Oliver Mtukudzi (23 January 2019) and Jonas Gwangwa (23 January 2021) .
